Unlocking Doors
What is Unlocking Doors
From 2017 to 2024 we effectively operated the Pan London Housing Reciprocal. This managed housing reciprocal scheme connects social housing tenancy landlords across London, so they are able to support their tenants who are at risk of violence and abuse, to find safe and stable housing. They do this by facilitating property ‘swaps’ and Safer London acts as a central administrator, ensuring the scheme is transparent and fair to all those who use it.
During our time running the Reciprocal, we’ve expanded our processes and criteria so we can support as many Londoners fleeing violence and abuse as possible. Originally a tool to support social housing tenants affected by domestic violence and gender-based violence, over time we opened access to young Londoners and their families affected by violence and exploitation, as well as those experiencing hate crime.
Now we’re sharing our learnings in this guide, so this important scheme can be replicated in other areas of the country based on local need.
